Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 development team unveiled significant changes to the game’s competitive ranking system during the BlizzCon 2023 Deep Dive. Addressing community feedback since the game’s release in October 2022, the overhaul aims to provide greater clarity and transparency.

Previously, Overwatch 2 replaced the Skill Rating (SR) system with a more abstract approach to skill tiers and divisions, leading to confusion among players. The upcoming update will reintroduce a progress bar, offering instant feedback on how each game impacts a player’s rank within their skill tier. This modification eliminates the need for a set number of wins or losses before a rank update.
Accompanying this change is the introduction of a new rank above Grandmaster, called “Ultimate,” recognizing the best Overwatch 2 players. Players participating in competitive matches will also be rewarded with the new Emerald weapons cosmetics.
The competitive rework will coincide with a rank reset for all players, promising an improved placement match system. While some players express reservations, comparing it to the original SR system, others welcome the increased transparency in tracking their progress through the competitive ranks.
