Shiny Shoe cuts battle pass and cosmetic shop, focusing on player sentiment.
Shiny Shoe, the development team behind the indie RPG Inkbound, has decided to eliminate all in-game monetization elements from the game, effective October 27, 2023. This means the removal of the battle pass and cosmetic shop from Inkbound, even though these features were already relatively unobtrusive.
In their announcement on Steam, Shiny Shoe explained, “We tried to make these as generous and straightforward as possible while simultaneously being 100% optional, cosmetic-only, with no impact on gameplay, and with no FOMO. However, it’s clear that industry and player sentiment is trending against the presence of these features. For that reason, we are removing in-game monetization completely.”
For players who have already purchased a battle pass or any cosmetics, compensation will be provided. Some players will have all that material automatically unlocked, and equivalent items will be relocated to a new, freely accessible “Cosmetic Vault.” The previous free unlock tracks of the Leveling Passes will also be moved to this vault.

Inkbound is of particular interest to the gaming community, given that it’s developed by Shiny Shoe, the creators of the acclaimed card game Monster Train. Monster Train was celebrated as the best card game of 2020 by PC Gamer and continues to be held in high regard by players.
Inkbound itself is an engaging game, blending roguelike RPG elements with turn-based battles that allow players to execute their turns alongside co-op partners in real-time. This unique system enables strategic planning and real-time ability usage during the player’s turn, reducing waiting times for other players to act. Set in a world where stories come to life, Inkbound encourages players to create powerful and creative character builds while working together to conquer formidable boss monsters. The latest season introduces a retro sci-fi space captain character alongside traditional wizards and warriors.
Inkbound is available on Steam for $20.
If you support the removal of in-game monetization features, casting your vote with your wallet is encouraged.
