And Exclusive Insights from Insomniac Games on Missions and Storyline
Prepare for a thrilling journey into the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2! With just over a month until its release on the PS5 console, we’re diving deep into the gameplay details. Insomniac Games has treated us to an extensive hands-on experience, offering a closer look at symbiote powers, combat mechanics, engaging activities, and the captivating storyline. Plus, we’ve gathered additional insights from key staff members who have poured their hearts into this project – Senior Creative Director Bryan Intihar, Senior Game Director Ryan Smith, and Senior Narrative Director Jon Paquette.
This extended gameplay session takes us through a gripping storyline, from a tense face-off between Kraven and a symbiote-empowered Spider-Man to the exhilarating gameplay reveal from earlier this year. Along the way, we encounter volatile science experiments, daring heists that require a hero’s touch, new web-swinging challenges, crime-fighting adventures, formidable boss battles, moments of humor, and exceptional character development.
Before immersing ourselves in the game, we revisited its predecessors to prepare for the upcoming adventure. The initial impressions were overwhelmingly positive – Insomniac Games has crafted a sequel that’s not only richer and denser but also brimming with heart. Here’s why Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 promises to be an exceptional gaming experience.

A Tale of Two Spiders: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gives equal billing to Peter Parker and Miles Morales. While main story beats guide you to play as one or the other, you’re mostly free to swap between them effortlessly, thanks to the lightning-fast SSD of the PS5. They share many side activities, Spider gadgets, and base upgrades but also have their unique storylines, missions, and skills. The button layouts remain identical, making character switching seamless and intuitive.
Evolved Move-Sets with Backstory: Peter’s mechanized Spider-Arms, previously a customizable suit power, are now his default loadout. The same goes for Miles’s bio-electrical Venom powers. Both powers come with their skill trees, unlocking exciting abilities like AOE attacks and multi-foe launchers. These powers add depth and versatility to combat, creating thrilling combat sequences.

Crowd-Controlled Spider Gadgets: The iconic web-shooters remain a tactical tool for webbing up enemies. You now have double the gadget capacity, and they recharge rapidly. In the demo, we had the Upshot drone, which fires web shots at nearby enemies, and the Web Grabber gadget, which yanks attached objects back, creating opportunities for AOE takedowns. The possibilities are endless, resulting in unexpected and hilarious moments.
The Savage Symbiote: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 introduces the Black Suit, and it’s a game-changer. The suit has its skill tree, featuring four formidable attacks. From tossing out tendrils to slam enemies into the ground to executing powerful launchers, the symbiote powers make combat feel brutal and visually spectacular. The special Symbiote Surge move is particularly thrilling, allowing precise targeting to permanently ground enemies.

Hunter’s Bell: The Black Suit is hypersensitive to sound, a key element of its mythos that Insomniac Games retains. Kraven’s intriguing presence is amplified as he confronts Spider-Man in a tense church-set cutscene. Kraven’s motivations make him a unique addition to the Spider-Man universe.
Monsters and Transformations: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 shifts its focus away from tech-based villains, exploring monstrous adversaries that offer a fresh narrative and gameplay perspective. Lizard and Venom embody themes of transformation, and even returning villain Mister Negative brings his own transformation narrative into play. Kraven, the hunter, takes on these formidable foes.

Hunted, Meet Hunter(s): Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ensures you won’t be overpowered by criminals. Kraven’s Hunters present a formidable challenge, with diverse enemy types and relentless waves of attacks. From airborne drones to shield carriers and explosive experts, you’ll need strategy and skill to prevail.
Parry: Dodging attacks is as intuitive as ever, but now you can parry certain attacks by timing your defenses correctly. This adds depth to combat, requiring quick reflexes in challenging encounters.

Harry and Friendship Circles: The game delves into the complexities of friendships and connections, as Peter and Miles navigate their evolving relationships. Harry Osborn, Peter’s best friend, returns to the story, bringing new dynamics and personal challenges.
Puzzles, Precision, and Gizmos: As mentioned at the preview’s start, Peter and Miles need to use smarts as well as fists. An early puzzle has me cleansing a DNA strand by zapping corrupt atoms without damaging healthy ones. Shortly after I’m crawling inside a mammoth particle accelerator resetting misaligned magnets, carefully pulling my DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers to align correctly on a different pressure point each. Much later, as Miles, I’m controlling a Spider Bot through vent shafts and distracting would-be robbers to reactivate security doors of a locked down community exhibition. Such interactions offer a nice counterpoint to fists and traversal tricks.

Spider-Quips: While there may be some darker themes to the game, there is tons of humor and funny remarks. During the lab sequence, there are three or four moments that elicit a hearty laugh from me. Be it Harry quietly and rapidly intoning “no black holes no black holes no black holes” as he activates the particle accelerator, Pete whispering to an imposing, ax-wielding and bearskin wearing Hunter “but I’ve no honey” before being slammed through a window, the Parker humor is represented and pitch-perfect.

A Story with Heart: The voice cast is nailing their lines as gravitas demands. You can feel Kraven’s resolution in every word Jim Pirri utters. Our brief hints at Tony Todd as Venom heard thus far in trailers are hair-raising. In my preview time, a scene that sees Miles at his father’s grave has the teenager uttering the words, “I’m Spider-Man – I can do everything myself.” A beautiful subtle mix of strength, hope, and uncertainty in the line sold by Nadji Jeter’s delivery. I’m as much excited to see what’s next for the characters behind the mask as for the unexpected twists and turns that happen while they’re wearing them.”
