In a creative mod for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Kirby joins the cast, showcasing his iconic abilities and outfits within the colorful Mario universe.

The release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the latest entry in the beloved franchise, has captivated fans with its dynamic gameplay and inventive features. This 2D platformer offers exhilarating gameplay, an array of playable characters, and an array of new power-ups. The roster of playable characters, including fan-favorite Princess Daisy, has become a significant highlight, marking her first appearance as a playable character in a mainline 2D platformer.
While Super Mario Bros. Wonder has only been available for a little over a week, the modding community is already rallying around the game. Modding Super Mario games has a rich history, dating back to old ROM hacks like those for Super Mario World. It’s no surprise, then, that modders are eager to infuse new content into Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The platformer has witnessed the emergence of various mods in its short existence, encompassing alterations ranging from the voice acting, with Kevin Afghani’s Mario having his lines replaced by Charles Martinet’s iconic voice, to the introduction of new playable characters.
One of the most notable character mods replaces a member of the playable cast with none other than Kirby.
This particular mod, crafted by the talented modder Insidious_NX, a well known contributor to titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Multiversus, introduces Kirby into the Super Mario Bros. Wonder universe. Insidious_NX showcased this exciting modification through a pair of brief videos posted on Twitter.
The first video offers a glimpse of Kirby as he collects three of the four newly introduced power ups in the game: the Bubble Flower, the Drill Mushroom, and the Fire Flower. While the video offers a delightful preview of Kirby’s presence in the game, Elephant Kirby, one of the character’s renowned forms, is conspicuously absent. This likely indicates that the model for this particular iteration hasn’t been created yet.
The second video takes players underwater as Kirby, kitted out with scuba gear and an inner tube for an aquatic adventure. The video also highlights the delightful transformation of power-ups into Kirby’s signature copy abilities, each reflected in the charming headwear Kirby dons. The Bubble Flower leads to Kirby sporting a hat akin to his appearance when wielding the bomb ability.
As he harnesses the power of the Fire Flower, Kirby becomes Fire Kirby, crowned with a flame-shaped headpiece. And with the Drill Mushroom in tow, Kirby embodies Drill Kirby, complete with the iconic hat from Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The video even briefly showcases Kirby using a parasol, akin to his parasol ability, under the Parachute Cap.
Although this mod is a work in progress, it exemplifies the burgeoning modding scene surrounding Super Mario Bros. Wonder, indicating a promising start to the game’s creative community.
