Discover the formidable Bloodthirst Dagger in Baldur’s Gate 3, a weapon that shines in the hands of rogues.

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a vast array of weapons, but not all are created equal. Among the arsenal of destruction, there is one dagger that stands out, especially for rogues, thanks to its formidable damage output and menacing appearance.

Beyond its prowess in combat, the Bloodthirst dagger in Baldur’s Gate 3 is particularly potent when wielded by a skilled rogue. Acquiring this blade is essential, whether playing as a rogue character or leveraging existing rogue companions like Astarion.

The Formidable Bloodthirst Dagger:

The legendary Bloodthirst dagger is the possession of Orin, a sinister shapeshifter and devout follower of the Lord of Murder, Bhaal. The mystique surrounding this weapon matches the malevolence of its wielder, as Orin treats it like an extension of herself in nearly every cutscene. Its crimson, asymmetrical blade was once owned by Bhaal himself when he was still a mortal man.

To acquire this dagger, players must venture into Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3’s story and ultimately face Orin in combat within the Bhaal Temple. How you reach that point and proceed afterward is up to you, including the Dark Urge playthrough option. Once you’ve defeated the changeling Orin, the legendary weapon is yours for the taking.

Orin doesn’t actually use Bloodthirst during battles; instead, she wields Crimson Mischief, a short sword, and Blade of the First Blood, a dagger that visually resembles Bloodthirst. However, should you defeat Orin and loot her body before ending the battle, typically by keeping her cultists alive until then, the dagger remains unchanged, and Bloodthirst remains unattainable.

But for narrative reasons, the dagger becomes Bloodthirst when looting Orin’s body after the battle concludes. The only difference between these two iterations is that when used in the off-hand, Bloodthirst has an Armor Class rating of +1, while Blade of the First Blood has an Armor Class rating of -1. First Blood also inflicts Necrotic damage in addition to Piercing Damage. There is no change in appearance. Both Bloodthirst and Blade of the First Blood are excellent choices, and your preference guides the selection.

Naturally, Bloodthirst is classified as a Light weapon, allowing it to be dual-wielded by specific classes, including rogues. It pairs well with Crimson Mischief, and the true advantage lies in its critical stat boost and the added Divination cantrip. In turn-based combat, a critical hit can determine life or death, and the fact that the dagger includes its True Strike cantrip means players can gain an advantage on their next Attack Roll once every turn.

Official Bloodthirst Dagger Stats:

  • Improved Critical: Reduces the roll required for a critical hit in attacks by 1. This effect can stack.
  • True Strike Divination Cantrip
  • Main Hand Only
  • Exploit Weakness: Creatures hit with this weapon become Vulnerable to Piercing Damage.
  • Off-Hand Only
  • True Strike Riposte: When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you may retaliate and gain True Strike.
  • Armor Class: +1
  • Weapon Enchantment +2
  • Range: 1.5 m
  • 1d4+2 Piercing

Clearly, Bhaal’s former blade is a rogue’s dream, both in terms of stats and the dagger’s dark history. It is a legendary weapon with a legacy of countless foes vanquished and likely many innocents as well. Whether you wield this wicked scarlet weapon for good or ill is your choice, but one thing is certain – you’ll look impressive either way.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PC and PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S version in development.
